Jerusalem Pride March 2010
Marching for Equality:
A Rally Marking the One-Year
Anniversary of the Bar-Noar Murders
March Schedule – Thursday July 29th, 2010
3:30 PM – Volunteer ushers gather at Gan Ha'atzmaut (Indpendence Park)
4:30-5:40 PM – Crowd gathers at Gan Ha'atmaut
5:45 PM – March begins to Gan Havradim (Rose Garden) in front of the Knesset
7:00 PM - Rally begins at Gan Havradim
9:15 PM – March ends
On the anniversary of the murders at Bar-Noar, those injured in the attack and the families of the two murdered activists will march along with the Jerusalem Open House (JOH) and other LGBT organizations from across the state of Israel in a rally culminating with a demonstration in front of the Knesset (Israeli parliament). This Jerusalem Pride March will mark the end of a year of mourning and the beginning of a year of activism in pursuit of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) rights and the eradication of discrimination and hate.
On Saturday September 1st, 2009 an armed man clad in a black mask burst into a youth support group meeting in the basement of Bar Noar – an LGBT youth organization on Nahmani Street in Tel Aviv. The intruder open fired, killing the group's leader Nir Katz and Liz Terobishi, who was only 16 at the time. Eleven others were injured, leaving two additional teenagers permanently disabled. The perpetrator was never found.
This tragedy serves as a terrible reminder to the LGBT community that we cannot tolerate any form of discrimination, intolerance, or prejudice. Many public figures pledged their support of our efforts, including Knesset members and ministers from all corners of the political spectrum. Some of these included Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Minister of Education Gideon Saar, Minister of Culture and Sport Limor Livnat, Minister for Social Welfare Services Isaac Herzog and Minister for Minority Affairs Avishay Braverman. But how will these promises of change be implemented?
The JOH has dedicated this year's Jerusalem Pride March to creating tangible changes in discriminatory legislation, and resource allocation. We do not seek to “provoke”, but rather to draw attention to the fact that Israeli law and public policy still discriminate against members of the LGBT community. The time has come to take action.
The Rights We're Marching For
"What is Equality to You" – a film by our summer intern Kati
Our demand for rights will focus on five key areas:
Access to Health Services: coverage for gender modification treatment and surgery under general basic health insurance; funding for research into transgender health issues; approval for men who have sex with men (MSM) to donate blood to Magen David Adom.
Right to Family: modifications of surrogacy laws to allow same-sex couples to conceive through an Israeli surrogate; the implementation of the Ministry of Social Affair's decision to allow same-sex couples to adopt children in Israel; changes in the procedure for adoption for same-sex couples to recognize the parental status of non-biological parents; codification of the rights of same-sex couples; recognition of marriages of same-sex couples performed abroad; extension of those rights bestowed to couples in common law unions to same-sex pairs.
Freedom from Hate: criminal punishment for individuals that provoke hate crimes against LGBT; recognition of victims of homophobic hate crimes; political asylum for LGBT individuals who are not citizens of Israel; inclusion of gender identity under the umbrella of legal prohibitions against discrimination based on sexual orientation; protection by the Family Court in cases of violence or abuse from a same-sex partner.
Freedom of Identity: modification of policy requiring transgender individuals to undergo full gender reassignment surgery (upper and lower surgery) before the sex on their state-issued ID cards will be changed; approval of an amendment to the Student’s Rights Acts to add protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity; revision of the Law of Interpretation to include discrimination based on gender identity when sexual orientation is mentioned.
Access to State Resources: reformation in local policies which prevent allocation of resources to budgets for LGBT community organizations; research on behalf of the Knesset's Research Department for Rights to determine discriminatory policies in state resource allocation.

How Can I Get Involved?
The Jerusalem Pride Parade needs community volunteers!
Physical and Virtual Presence: Become a visible supporter of LGBT rights and of the Jerusalem Pride Parade. Pass out fliers in your neighborhood or in other popular public places! Join the parade's Facebook page and invite friends!
Ushering: Want to take a more active role during the parade itself? We need ushers to guide people along the parade route and to inform JOH staff of any issues. Ushers are crucial to ensure the parade runs smoothly. Volunteers will meet at 3:30 PM the day of the Parade (Thursday, July 29th) at Gan Ha'atmaut for an orientation. Unfortunately, if you are unable to make the orientation, you cannot be an usher during the march. You will still get to participate in the event itself - you will just get to wear an official t-shirt while you do it! Recruit your friends, family or random people off the street to help as well. The more the merrier! Please register ahead of time by emailing office@joh.org.il.
Contact community@joh.org.il for more details about how you can get involved!
To buy an official Pride T-Shirt for NIS 30, you can pick one up at the Jerusalem Open House or at the JOH booth at Gan Ha'atzmaut the day of the march. You can also email office@joh.org.il to place an order.
Partner Organizations in the Event:
